man..

there is so much talent here in terms of producers. i love the scratch effects in this thing.

beautiful.

it's like I am receiving thousands of 1 UPs. damn, you make some great beats man, real talk.

trancedatlantic responds:

man Im glad you think so cause if I do a track like this again i'll probably sample you! this reminded me of throwing fire in Super Mario Bros for NES.

Word.

You too man, you're a beast.

lord.

it's hilarious that the finisher line is that he shouldn't respond because he was already dead...and then he didn't.

.....

and this is what we've been waiting for?
Gas to advance.
For fuck's sake, Smorg.

basically, i agree with delinquent.

the fact of the matter is, the bracket fell in a way that two of the best people in the competition met earlier than they really should have, either one could be in the championship with a different draw.

in spite of any talk, anyone who says "nimbus sucks" or "cynic sucks" in this specific battle is just hating. it was a good battle that did the competition well.

i'm not voting since you guys are on my side of the bracket, but here's some of my observations.

Cynic had a lot more personal attacks.
Nimbus had a lot more spins on what Cynic said.
Each has a specific style, and both good, so a lot of votes are gonna be on preference.

Whatever people choose, it'd be good to respect the effort these two put in and give it at least a couple listens so you can cast an honest vote.

...hmmm..

another solid battle. I had to spin this thing a couple times.

My vote goes to Self.
When it really comes down to it, the content was damn near even. I originally thought Self came a little soft in the first round, but after digging around Steve's profile, there were a lot of punches that slipped past me like the import/export line.

Self was clean and confident through both rounds. I don't mind saying "I'm not trying" once in a while, but it's been a common theme in the hype track, the first battle, and now this one, and it's getting tired, whether you're trying or not. In general though, Self is solid and belongs in the semis.

Steve had some nice punches and a more complex rhyme scheme, but the charisma didn't come through enough, and it sounded a little forced when it did. When the content is relatively even, that's what it comes down to.

In general, this battle was better than some of the semifinal ones will probably be, but that's the way the bracket falls. You both have a lot of talent, props for a good battle.

dayam.

man, i was lickin my chops when i thought i had a chance to mess with this beat for the NG competition, it's sick as hell. props, for real.

lord...tough, tough to judge.

first off this is by far the hardest battle i've had to judge to date. you guys both put on a great show. you guys got a really though beat with an 90's swing style that kinda forced it to have a happier feel that you both adapted to really well.
I listened through a few times, each time focusing on the individual categories.

there wasn't much wordplay in this thing, just a shitload of punches. so narrowed down the most important categories the best I could.

Delivery and flow: 10-10. Both of you guys have got skill, and both of you guys had some moments that you fell off the beat and forced some syllables. Gasmasq had a more complex rhyme scheme. Whatever disadvantage ICON suffered from that though, he made up with more charisma.

Content: 10-9 Gasmasq.
There were some decent personals, but there was plenty of filler for both of them. I didn't feel like there were any real knockout punches in this battle, it was more like a rap marathon, which can be cool too. Gas flipped the mom line, but for a little bit too long, I thought. The rahrahrahrahrah was funny and well delivered for ICON. What It really came down to for me was that I didn't think Icon's punches held as much weight as his flow and charisma. Saying he looks like Lilo and Stich and someone from All That brings more attention to the fact that you watch kid shows than it harms him. I agreed with the review that said the Japan line was forced and uncomfortable. You have the entire world to choose from lyrically, and it may not be the best thing to take a current crisis and make light of it within a week or so of it's happening for a battle rap. I'm not taking off points for that, I just think it's a poor decision.

In summary, I have to go with Gasmasq in a very, VERY close battle between two battlers who represent some of the best of what this competition has to offer. Good luck to both of you guys.

Cynic

always like a good battle with some history.
Boxing scores.

Wordplay: 10-8, Cynic
The "HeIsAlive" name references were solid with the autopsy and limping stuff. HeisAlive tried with the pedastal line, but pedastool is not a word and it was pretty general.

Delivery: 10-9, Cynic
Cynic has a rhyme scheme that moves around well. HeIsAlive did well with his rhymes, but Cynic is tough. HeIsAlive has done a bouncy iambic pentameter type flow (da duhda duhda) for his last 3 battles without any variation. I think if you changed up your rhyme scheme to a different beat pattern every once in a while, it would give some versatility.

Content: 10-9 Cynic
Cynic made it a little more personal, even though both used a good amount of filler. HeIsAlive spent most of his first verse talking about how smart he was, and it could have been used against anyone in this competition. I would have liked for him to focus in more on Cynic on a personal level..or on ANY level. My favorite line came from HeIsAlive though, with the "we just collaborated" finish.

Cynic overall in a respectable battle. Both get props.
