Shore Acres: 20 Years Later!

Posted by MadFLeX - April 21st, 2020

Good people! Although many of you don't know me these days, NG was a hot spot for my creativity growing up, and it's inspiring to see so much amazing artistry has been normalized around here over the years.

19 years ago, I made Shore Acres, a very basic and simple point-and-click adventure game based on some of my childhood experiences. I had never learned anything about art, and the tools of the time were primitive. I followed it up with Shore Acres 2, which, at the time, put up almost a million plays. Although these games were really poorly executed, it was exciting to have an outlet for my creativity in the form of an organic, flawed game, driven entirely by plot.

I've gotten a little better. On and off, for years, I have made over 200 backgrounds for a remake of the first game, with a plot line substantially bigger and more focused, but never truly committed to its completion. However, the map and and backgrounds are nearly finished, and I have moved on to the gameplay, which has become pretty motivating. My hope is to release it on November 4, 2021, which would the the 20th anniversary of the original game.

The game will ultimately be renamed with a new soundtrack for branding purposes and professionalism, but a lot of the original concepts will remain with more detail, accurate maps, less plot holes, and less tiresome pixel hunting--ultimately a more mature approach. For those of you who are interested in following the progress, I will be updating my blog more often to stay motivated. Here are a few screen shots from the progress I've made so far.

In the meanwhile, wishing you all well during all this world chaos, all the best.

-B

Love seeing this! By the way, the original Shore Acres games might be running fine with Ruffle... Do these seem good to you?

I could enable Ruffle on those and they won't need Flash anymore. Might even work ok on mobile devices!

They're great! They only issue I've had with Ruffle are text boxes not showing up for things like prompted name inputs, so far, but it's a great substitute for the flash player so far.

Looks really good my friend
